Gene Doyle
Doyle who died in 2018, led Cedar Falls High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to three traditional state team wrestling championships (1993, 97-98) and one state dual team title (1993) during 15 seasons as head coach from 1985-2000. His overall high school record was 251-52, including 10 individual state championships, 43 state place winners, and six top five finishes. Although he never wrestled competitively, Keith Young and Bill Dotson, both members of the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, mentored Doyle prior to his tenure as Cedar Falls head wrestling coach.
As a teacher and coach, Mr. Doyle had a 47-year career educator before retiring. Following graduation from the Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) he had a one year stop at Keota and then 8 years as an assistant at Dubuque Senior, before going to Cedar Falls where he taught and coached for 38 years. He was an assistant wrestling coach to Hall of Fame inductee Keith Young from 1972 to 1985, when he took over as head coach. In 16 seasons he compiled a 241-52 dual meet mark (82.3 winning pct.) with three traditional state championships (1993,97 and 98) and six top five finishes. He also guided the Tigers to four State Dual Team Tournaments, winning the 1993 crown with second and third place finishes in 1995 and 1998 respectively He coached 43 medal winners at the State Wrestling Tournament with 10 becoming State Champions. Twice he was named District and State Coach-of-the-Year and was a 1998 nominee from Iowa for National Coach-of-the-Year as selected by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He has also been a long-time assistant in the Cedar Falls track and football programs and has been a wrestling official for 20 seasons.
