D’Youville University will be embarking on their first women’s wrestling season in 2023-24 and have high hopes to develop a high caliber team under the guidance of Coach Carlene Sluberski.

Carlene achieved fame when she became the first girl in NYSPHSAA boys wrestling to reach the finals (she reach the finals in the Division II classification) Coach Sluberski was wrestling for Fredonia Central School under the mentorship of Alex Conti. Alex has been become one of the leading voice of women’ wrestling in New York State the past few years and has helped with the establishing the first girls state invitation tournament in the 2022-23 season.

Coach Sluberski subsequent to Fredonia attended Northern Michigan, where there was an Olympic Development team. However, she would after two years at Northern Michigan transfer to Brock College in Canada and finish up with a stellar 2 year career in wrestling. Following Brock, she was a graduate assistant at the University of Cumberland in southern Kentucky and then acquired her first head coach job at University of Providence in Montana. From there, Carlene would become the assistant coach for 2 years at Eastern Oregon. And when D’Youville came calling Coach Sluberski would leave the west coast and return home to western New York state.

D’Youville University is small, strong academic university that has been at the forefront of developing sport programs for women. Sluberski spent last year recruiting and building the roster of the Saints. This season she will have Tricia Saunders Award winner for New York State, Emily Sindoni, wrestling for her. Coach Sluberski has high hopes for Emily and her squad. The Upstate New York Chapter applaud the efforts of D’Youville and wish Carlene the best of luck with her program.
