MADRID, Spain – 2026 U23 Pan American champions Nina Makem and Alexandira Alli led the U.S. women’s freestyle team at the Grand Prix of Spain with falls to secure their gold medals on Saturday at Pabellón Central Consejo Superior de Deportes.
Marissa Gallegos, Caley Graber and Taylor Whiting are all winners of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award.
Makem pinned her way through the tournament to claim gold at 65 kg. She started with a first-period fall against Silja Kamppinen of Finland. Then, in the semifinals, she pinned U23 World participant Agnes Nygren at the 5:38 mark in the bout. In the gold match, she locked in the fall with just two seconds left in the contest to win gold against four-time age-group World participant Anne Nuernberger of Germany.
Alli also bonused her way to the top spot on the podium at 72 kg, starting with a pair of 10-0 technical falls. She first upended World University Championships runner-up Cassie Corbett of Canada, then beat four-time age-group World competitor Karolina Jaworska of Poland. In the finals, she pinned two-time Olympian Zaineb Sghaier of Tunisia to finish the day for Team USA.
Gallegos and Whiting also advanced to gold-medal bouts but fell just short, claiming silver medals.
At 55 kg, Gallegos pinned Aliana Makhametova of Kazakhstan and Spain’s Elvira Zarco to move into the finals but lost a 1-1 contest on criteria. Whiting bonused her way to the 53 kg championship with a pair of tech falls and a pin, but lost 10-0 to Alexa Valenzuela of Venezuela.
Graber, Bella Williams and Madison Sandquist all won bronze for Team USA.
Sandquist alternated results at 72 kg, where she edged out Canada Senior World Teamer Aleah Nickel, 5-2, but lost to division runner-up Sghaier, 10-1. Moving into the bronze medal match, Sandquist took down two-time age-group World participant Vincenza Amendola of Italy in a 6-2 contest. After being pinned in her opening match of the tournament, Graber (59 kg) was pulled into the bronze medal round and pinned World University Championships silver medalist Anna Michalcova of Czechia 1:28 into the battle.
Two-time age-group Pan American champion Williams (59 kg) pinned four-time age-group World Teamer Aleksandra Witos of Poland to start the tournament but fell into the bronze medal round after suffering a 10-0 setback to reigning Senior World bronze medalist Laurence Beauregard of Canada. Williams collected bronze after Senior World bronze medalist Nothelie Hoeie of Norway injury defaulted.
In the team standings, the U.S. finished second with 135 points, only behind Canada, which compiled 148 points. Germany rounded out the top three with 81 points.
The Grand Prix of Spain wraps up on Sunday with men’s freestyle. Antonio Tolbert and Mekhi Lewis will represent the U.S. in the division. Competition begins at 10 a.m. local time, 4 a.m. ET.
