SanctionPA Making Strides to Provide Opportunities to Girls

In 2020, wrestling leaders in the state of Pennsylvania launched “SanctionPA” to work towards getting girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport in the commonwealth. With 29 states officially sanctioning girls wrestling, the group’s goal is to get Pennsylvania on board. Current PIAA by-laws require a minimum of 100 schools form a girls’ team before the PIAA will consider adding girls wrestling as an official sport. To achieve the goal of sanctioning, SanctionPA, including PAUSAW, the NWCA, PWCA, and PA Chapter of the NHOF, works to educate stakeholders about girls wrestling, collaborate with individual schools to form teams, provide resources to schools and coaches to assist in developing girls’ teams, and coordinate competition opportunities. This past year, the group held webinars, produced information packets, created recruiting resources, and reached out to individual schools across the state to help move girls wrestling forward. Since J.P. McCaskey in the School District of Lancaster formed in March 2020, eight additional schools have followed and participation for girls in the state showed gains of over 30% from last season to the current 2020-2021 season, with gains of over 200% since several years ago. Girls wrestling is here and SanctionPA is proud to be working toward the growth of our great sport.

Our Mission: To honor the sport of wrestling by preserving its history, recognizing extraordinary individual achievements, and inspiring future generations
