NWCA Announces NCAA Women’s Wrestler of the Month Regional Winners

MANHEIM, Pennsylvania – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced their inaugural NCAA Women’s Wrestler of the Month Regional Winners on Friday. Olivia Shore of Tiffin University, Yelena Makoyed of North Central College, Sage Mortimer of King University, and Cameron Guerin of McKendree University were honored for their performances in November.

Guerin, Mortimer and Shore are all winners of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award.

Northeast Region
The Ohio winner of the TSHSEA award in 2021, Shore was the Northeast Region’s Wrestler of the Month after starting her career with seven straight wins. She won the East Stroudsburg open at 101 pounds, taking all of her wins by fall. She followed that by winning the highly contested Missouri Valley Open with two wins against ranked opponents.

Northwest Region
Makoyed was the Northwest Region’s Wrestler of the Month after going 5-0 against ranked opponents and earning four technical falls in the opening month of the season. She was the 170-pound champion at the Missouri Valley Open on November 20. Following an opening-round bye, she defeated King’s Chey Bowman, who is now ranked fourth in the tournament’s second round. In the third round, she defeated Baker University’s Elisa Robinson, ranked first in the NAIA poll at 191 pounds, by technical fall before taking out Missouri Valley College’s Brooke-Lynn Rush by technical fall. In the semis, she earned a technical fall win over NAIA fifth-ranked Texas Wesleyan University’s Brittyn Corbishley. In the final, she took a 10-0 technical fall over McKendree’s Joye Levendusky, who is ranked third in the latest poll.

Southeast Region
The Utah winner of the TSHSEA in 2021, Mortimer was the Southeast Region’s Wrestler of the Month after starting her collegiate career with seven straight wins. This includes two wins over top-five opponents. She won the highly attended Missouri Valley Open at 116 pounds with a 6-0 record with two ranked wins. In the quarterfinals, she earned a first-period pin, coming in 2:52 over third-ranked and two-time All-American Sugey Ceja of Tiffin. She pushed to a 10-0 technical fall over fifth-ranked Carly Valleroy of McKendree in her tournament’s opening match. Mortimer then defeated Mateah Roehl of North Central, who is now ranked seventh in the semifinals before topping Life University’s Salyna Shotwell in the championship bout.

Southwest Region
The Washington winner of the TSHSEA in 2018, Guerin was the Southwest Region’s Wrestler of the Month after starting with nine straight wins, including four pins and five technical falls. She started the season by winning the Pointer Women’s Open, defeating sixth-ranked Niya Gaines of North Central on a 10-0 technical fall. Guerin then won the Missouri Valley Open at 130 pounds, pinning second-ranked Phoenix Dubose of King in the final. She took three straight wins at the tournament by 10-0 technical fall.

All four are now eligible for NWCA National Wrestler of the Month that will be announced on Tuesday, December 7.
