Lee Roy Smith III was the big brother. You know, the brother who blazes the trail. Sets the standard for others to follow.

Tinker Owens was the little brother. You know that type, too. The brother who looks up to his idol. Who dreams of doing what his brother has done.

Smith and Owens are forever linked as members of two of Oklahoma’s most prominent sports families. Now they’ll forever be linked as members of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame’s 2022 class. 

Smith, Owens, former OSU football star R.W. McQuarters, former Fellowship of Christian Athletes state director Chuck Bowman, the late New York Yankees pitcher Wilcy Moore and the late rodeo star Lane Frost will be inducted Monday night at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Tinker Owens joins his older brother, Steve, in the Hall, and the Owenses bring to five the number of families with multiple enshrinees: baseball’s Waners (Paul and Loyd); football’s Selmons (Lucious, Lee Roy and Dewey); media’s Barrys (Bob Sr. and Bob Jr.); and wrestling’s Smiths (John and Pat beat Lee Roy III to the honor).

“My dad (Lee Roy Smith Jr.) used to have this saying, that success breeds success,” Lee Roy Smith III said. “He said it often, because he felt that all of us had good athleticism, and as I had success, he wanted to see that passed on.”
