ZAGREB, Croatia – The Sunday evening semifinal round at Arena Zagreb saw two Americans—Levi Haines and Trent Hidlay—power through to the men’s freestyle World finals. Haines and Hidlay push the U.S. finalist count up to three through eight weights.
Haines leveraged a four-point second period to overtake 2025 Asian bronze medalist Suldkhuu Olonbayar of Mongolia in the 79 kg semifinals. He will face 2024 Olympian Georgios Kougioumtsidis of Greece for the gold medal tomorrow night.
Hidlay motored his way to a 15-4 technical fall against three-time World medalist Osman Nurmagomedov of Azerbaijan. He continued to press his attacks and separated himself with a monster four-point body lock in the second period. It’ll be UWW athlete Amanula Gadzhimagomedov for Hidlay in the gold medal match.
Two-time age-group World medalist David Carr was pulled into the repechage at 74 kg thanks to a buzzer beating comeback from 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Cherman Valiev of Albania against 2020 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Zaurbek Sidakov of UWW in the semis.
Carr’s repechage opponent will either be Tugsjargal Erdenebat of Mongolia or Ibragim Veliev of Belgium. He needs one win to advance to the bronze medal match.
2024 Olympic silver medalist Spencer Lee, who was surprisingly ousted in the quarterfinals by three-time World medalist Arsen Harutyunyan of Armenia, received a disappointing result in the 57 kg semis. Harutyunyan was pinned by North Korea’s Chongsong Han, sealing Lee’s fate on the outside looking in of the repechage.
Lee finished with a 1-1 record in his first Senior World Championships as the No. 1 seed in his weight. His lone win was a 10-0 technical fall against Yusuf Demir of Turkey. Lee is a three-time age-group World champion.
