Dan Gable Museum releases special edition DVD on the life of Dan Gable
WATERLOO, Iowa—A new DVD on the life of Dan Gable is now available through the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum.
The program—called “Iowa Icons: Dan Gable”—features a candid one-on-one interview of Dan Gable with host Eric Braley. Gable discusses his life changing moments, including the murder of his sister to his athletic and coaching careers, and his continued efforts to promote the sport of wrestling. Filming took place at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Dan Gable’s hometown.
Each DVD features the full-length 45 minute program along with extras not seen on television. The film was produced by Around the Corner Productions for television distribution with its initial airing seen on KCRG-TV9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
“We received a tremendous response to this video so we wanted to share it with as many people as possible,” said Braley. “This was an amazing opportunity to gain insight from a true icon.”
Gable won three individual state wrestling titles at West Waterloo (1964-1966) and compiled a 64-0 career high school record. He went on to win two individual NCAA titles at Iowa State University with a career college record of 117-1. Gable won an Olympic gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics without surrendering a point.
Gable went on to lead the University of Iowa to 15 NCAA championships and 21 consecutive Big 10 titles in 21 seasons (1977-1997) during his tenure as head wrestling coach. In 2000, Sports Illustrated named him the top sports figure in the state. There are three statues throughout the Iowa dedicated to Dan Gable’s legacy.
On October 25, 2012, Iowa governor Terry Branstad declared Dan Gable Day statewide.
“Dan Gable used the significant losses in his life, and on the mat, to drive him be a better person and a better wrestler,” said Brad Wells, executive producer on the project. “That’s really inspiring.”
