Coach Alex Conti Recieves NWCA National High School Coaches of the Year
The Upstate New York Chapter of the NWHOF is proud that Alex Conti was awarded the NWCA Girls Coach of the Year Award. Alex has been instrumental in the development of girls’ wrestling in the Empire state and promoting all wrestling in the state. He has been coaching wrestling for 28 years and has complied a very impressive record of 341-73-3 record during his illustrious career. The last 19 years he was at Fredonia and coached the first female to reach the finals of the NYSPHSAA Championships – that being Carlene Sluberski. Alex’s work has resulted in the first New York State Girls Championships which were held in Syracuse in January 2022. The event was not sanctioned by the state but was considered a state championship tournament … the first ever in New York for girls.
The Chapter is proud to recognized Alex for his dedication to wrestling for both boys and girls. Coach Conti has been a leader in his section, Section VI, and the state. Former Section VI Executive Director, Timm Slade – an Outstanding American Award winner in the Chapter, has said this about Alex, “Coach Conti has had a distinguished career in both girls and boys wrestling in the state and section. Coaches like Alex serve as a perfect role model for young coaches to aspire to. The Section is very fortunate to have coaches like him to advance and promote the sport.” Thank you, Alex, for everything that you do for the greatest sport in the country.
