South Carolina Becomes 41st State With Official Girls State Championships
USA Wrestling’s Girls High School Development Committee, led by Joan Fulp and Andrea Yamamoto, have recognized South Carolina as the 41st state to host a state girls wrestling championships.
The South Carolina High School League voted to hold an individual girls state championship in wrestling for the 2022-23 season. The first event was held along side the boys state individual championship on February 24 & 25th, 2023 in Anderson, S.C. and is run by the South Carolina Coaches Association. As there were no regional qualifiers, this event was open to all eligible girls in the state. There were 191 entries in the competition, and state champions were crowned in 15 weight classes.
The USA Wrestling’s Girls High School Development Committee expects to recognize other states who have approved an official girls state wrestling championship in upcoming days.
