Frank Bennett
Frank Bennett graduated from West Chester State College in 1936 and earned advanced degrees at Columbia University. He was a highly successful football coach at Fair Lawn High School his team’s earning a record of 113-80-6 and winning four state championships: 1948, ‘51, ‘52, and ‘55. He was instrumental in starting wrestling at Liberty High School in Pennsylvania in 1928, Washington High School in New Jersey in 1936 and Fair Lawn in 1946. During the period of 1953 to 58 his wrestling teams compiled a record of 52-5 including a string of 26 dual meet wins. He is credited with producing Washington’s (Warren Hills) and Fair Lawn’s first state champions. Bennett was an enormous help in getting several Bergen County schools to initiate wrestling programs including East Paterson, Glen Rock, Ridgewood, and Woodridge. He also helped organize the first scholastic wrestling league in Bergen County. After coaching, he entered the world of officiating and soon became one of the state’s outstanding officials working a number of New Jersey state finals as well as competitive college matches.
