Jim Bowers
Lifetime Service Jim graduated from Penn Hills High School out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania back in 1947. In 1955 he received his Bachelor of Science degree and in 1963 he earned his Masters degree "” both from Illinois State Normal University (now simply known as Illinois State). Jim taught and coached at Bloomington from 1955 through 1984"” a total of 29 years. His coaching involvement includes golf coach, football coach and wrestling coach. As a golf coach, Jim's teams won back-to-back state titles. His football coaching career spanned 18 years. During the 29 years Jim spent as a wrestling coach his teams won 303 dual meets while losing only 157 and tying seven others. He won 14 IHSA District (Regional) titles, 4 IHSA Sectional titles and ten Big 12 Conference Championships. In 1972 his team finished fifth in the IHSA State Finals. Forty-two of Jim's wrestlers qualified for the State Finals with 12 placewinners. Additionally, Jim served as a member of the IHSA Wrestling Rules Advisory Board. In 1972 his peers honored his accomplishments by designating Jim as the IWCOA Coach-of-the-Year. For Jim's coaching success and his long-term commitment to and support of the sport of wrestling he was selected to the Illinois State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983; he was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 1985; he was extended membership in to the Bloomington-Normal Officials Association Hall of fame in 1999; and finally, Jim served as Grand Marshall for the Illinois State Wrestling Championships in 2000.
