Erie James "Jimmy" Miller coached at Cornell, his alma mater, for 27 years. As a student he captained the team and won honors as a national AAU Champion (twice) and as an Eastern Intercollegiate Champion in 1946. As a coach, his team won the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship in 1958 and produced three National Champions: Dave Auble, Frank Bertucci, and Don Dickinson. He was chosen to coach the USA Pan American Games team in 1967 which won 8 gold medals in Winnipeg, Canada. Coach Miller retired from coaching in 1975 and was immediately inducted into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also elected to the New York State Athletic Hall of Fame. For a long period of time, the Ivy League title was all but conceded to Cornell each year while Coach Miller ran the program. At one point Cornell won that honor more than a dozen years in a row. Any sighs of relief heard from Cambridge, New Haven or Princeton upon his retirement were premature because the winning ways he had instilled did not retire with him. Coach Miller's contributions to wrestling were life-long and beyond. The strength of the wrestling program at Cornell today is in large part due to his dedication and leadership. The legacy of Coach Miller is also that of Reverend Miller. He was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1976 after many years as a vital lay pastor to two congregations. His life is an example to all who knew him as an athlete, coach, pastor and active public servant. Coach Miller passed away April 24, 2002.
