Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock excelled as a wrestler during his days at Bloomsburg University.

He was a NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II champion and was named the Outstanding Wrestler at both national tournaments as a senior in 1974. Hitchcock also was a three-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion and had a career dual meet record of 84-7-2. He was also a silver medalist at the 1973 World Games held in Moscow.

He began his coaching career at Lake Lehman High School and led his team to the 1981 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA state wrestling team championship. Hitchcock's teams also won four District 2 titles and he was named district coach of the year four times.

Two of his wrestlers were Rick Bonomo, a Distinguished Member inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008, and his twin brother Rocky Bonomo. The brothers went on to wrestle at Bloomsburg University where Ricky was a three-time NCAA champion and Rocky was a two-time All-American.

Hitchcock coached Millersville University from 1984 to 2002 and led his team to three NCAA Division I East Region titles with 18 East Regional champions and 28 NCAA qualifiers. He was named NCAA East Region Coach of the Year twice.

Before he passed away in 2002 with more than 200 people in attendance to honor the 1951 wrestling team, Hitchcock was presented a special award from Millersville University.

The founder of the Millersville wrestling program, Dr. Tedd Rupp said, "He is firm, but fair with his athletes. What you see is what you get. He commands their respect and, with many, their love."
