Michael DiPiano

Medal of Courage

Mike DiPiano coached wrestling at St. Benedict's Prep for 20 years during which time he produced some outstanding teams and individual wrestlers despite the fact that most wrestlers came to St. Benedicts with no wrestling background. His teams have earned 275 dual meet victories during his career in Newark including seven sectional titles and five state championships. Mike has coached a number of individuals to championships including 40 District Champions, 10 Regional Champions, 2 NJSIAA State Champions, 20 Independent School State Champions, and 1 National Champion. During this string of successful wrestling experiences Mike encounter serious health problems requiring the transplant of the pancreas and kidney. Although ill, he continued to coach and contribute to his team's success. His positive attitude and determination, characteristics he acquired in the sport of wrestling, helped him battle with these health issues. During his distinguished career DiPiano has received many honors none more meaningful than having St. Benedicts recognizing him as an Honorary Alumnus and inducting him into their Hall of Fame.
