Virgil Milliron

August 01, 1932 - April 17, 2014

Virgil Milliron is known throughout Oklahoma for his outstanding high school wrestling teams and starting the wrestling program at Rose State College in 1970.

He started his 35-year coaching career in 1948 as a student in Perry High School, serving as a student assistant in the junior high school. While attending Central State University, Milliron coached the Edmond Junior High School wrestling team.

In 1956, following his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, Milliron became head wrestling coach at John Marshall High School. In 1965 he moved to U.S. Grant High School where he remained for five years until becoming athletic director and wrestling coach at Rose State College.

After being the head wrestling coach at Auburn University from 1973-77, he returned to Oklahoma to coach at Moore Central High School and Midwest City High School before returning to Rose State College as athletic director, wrestling coach and men's and women's tennis coach. He remained at Rose State until his retirement in 1986.

Milliron's teams enjoyed tremendous success. John Marshall Junior High School won the 1958 state championship, John Marshall High School won the Oklahoma state team title in 1963 and 1964, U.S. Grant won the state championship in 1966 and 1967, and Midwest City won the state championship in 1978 and 1979.

In all, his teams won 12 straight conference titles. Auburn won the 1973 and 1977 Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championship and the Southeastern Intercollegiate Conference championship in 1974. Milliron's career record was 190-75-3 and he was named the Oklahoma Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1962, 1966 and 1979. He coached the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State team in 1979.

Named to the Oklahoma High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1966, Milliron was a 30-year member of the Oklahoma Wrestling Coaches Association and served as president two times.
