Virgil Milliron

Virgil Milliron is known throughout Oklahoma for his outstanding high school wrestling teams and starting the wrestling program at Rose State College in 1970. He started his 35 year coaching career in 1948 while a student in Perry High School, serving as a Student Assistant in the Junior High School. While attending college at Central State, Milliron coached the Edmond Junior High wrestling team. In 1956, following his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, Milliron became Head Wrestling Coach at John Marshall High School. In 1965 he moved to U.S. Grant High School where he remained five years until he became Athletic Director and Wrestling Coach at Rose State College. From 1973 to 1977 he was the Head Wrestling Coach at Auburn University. He returned to Oklahoma to coach at Moore Central High School, Midwest City High School and then back to Rose State College as Athletic Director, Wrestling Coach and Tennis Coach for Men and Women. He remained at Rose State until his retirement in 1986. Milliron's teams enjoyed tremendous success. The John Marshall Junior High won the 1958 State Championship, the John Marshall High School teams won the Oklahoma High School Championship in 1963 and 1964, the U.S. Grant High School teams won the state championship in 1966 and 1967, and the Midwest City High School teams won the state championships in 1978 and 1979. In all, his teams won twelve straight conference titles. His Auburn University teams won the 1973 and 1977 Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Associations Championships and the Southeastern Intercollegiate Conference Championship in 1974. Milliron's overall career record is 190-75-3. Milliron was three times named the Oklahoma Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1962-1966-1979 and was named Coach of the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State Team in 1979. He was named to the Oklahoma High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1966. He is a 30 year member of the Oklahoma Wrestling Coaches Association and served as president two times.
