Don Flavin
"Father of DeKalb wrestling."
Left distinct imprint on sport for six decades.
Originated Barb program in 1954-55 and directed DeKalb High School to 13 straight winning seasons, 10 district titles, three sectional championships, two league diadems, and an Illinois High School Association championship in 1968.
Became coach of alma mater, Northern Illinois University, in 1968 and was winningest wrestling coach in school history with a 160-82-12 record and 14 winning seasons in 18 years. Coached four All-Americans, 19 Mid-American Conference champions and 36 NCAA qualifiers. Led team to 40-point win at MAC tournament with five NCAA qualifers in 1985.
Career record of 311-119-14 dual record in 32 years at DeKalb High School (1954-68) and NIU (1968-86).
Voted IHSA Coach of the Year in 1968 and MAC Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1985.
Served as a medic in the United States Army in 1951-52.
Member of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame, the Northern Illinois University Hall of Fame and the DeKalb High School Wall of Fame.
Received National Wrestling Coaches Association 25-Year Service Award and Presidential Citation from Ronald Reagan.
Director of the U.S. Olympic Freestyle and Greco-Roman training camp at NIU in 1976.
