Tom Carr

Tom Carr was a 1951 graduate of Wilkes-Barre Meyers High School where he won PIAA District II titles in his freshman (103 lbs.) and senior (138) years. He was a District runner-up as a sophomore and junior while wrestling at 120 and 133, respectively. He was also the Outstanding Wrestler of the first Wilkes-Barre tournament in 1950 and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in vocational education from Wilkes College. Following a two-year hitch in the Navy, Tom did post-grad work at Penn State and received his Masters of Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. He served as a volunteer wrestling coach at Meyers for three years, 1952-54, and at Hanover (Dist. 2) from 1957-59 and was a paid assistant at Reading High School in 1960-61. In 1963 he became the head wrestling coach at Erie Tech and remained there for the next 27 years, retiring in 1990. While his teams were 169-201-3 over this period, the true measure of Coach Carr's success was the number of outstanding individual wrestlers he produced, coaching 59 Sectional champions, 29 District X champions, 14 regional champions and five PIAA champions. Six Erie Tech wrestlers have participated in the Pittsburgh Press Classic (USA vs. Pennsylvania), the most from any school in the state. Tom was the District X Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1983, and his '83 team finished second to Easton in the PIAA tournament. He served as President of the District X Coach's Association in I 981 and was inducted into the Erie Chapter of the Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. The following year he was honored with his induction into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. Retirement didn't sit well and Carr returned to the mats in 1999 as the assistant coach of the Fairview Junior High School wrestling team. This past season he moved up and assisted at Fairview High School.
