Glenn Smith

Glenn Smith's wrestling coaching career began in 1946, when he started a wrestling program at Bellefonte High School. During his six seasons at Bellefonte he compiled a record or 52-7-1. His teams held a 33 dual meet winning streak and had three undefeated seasons during his tenure. Smith coached 4 State Champions and 4 State Runners-Up while at Bellefonte. These State Champs included Tom Riglin, Joe Masulla, Tom Musser and Dave Adams. While at Bellefonte Smith coached Larry Fornicola, who went on to Penn Slate and a successful coaching career at Allentown Dieruff High School. He also coached Budd Whitehill who went on to coach at Lycoming College for 37 years. Both Fornicola and Whitehill are past recipients of the "Lifetime Service to Wrestling" award. Smith continued his career at Allentown High School, where he compiled a record of 94-44-2. During his Allentown coaching career, he had 4 undefeated seasons and 2 seasons with only one defeat. He held a winning streak at Allentown of 44 meets. He coached State Champions Russ Rohrback, Bill Traner, Dick Rushatz and Al Rushatz. As an athlete, Smith lettered in football, wrestling and track. He was selected as the Outstanding Athlete in 1938 at Mt. Carmel High School. He attended Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, PA for two years, participating in wrestling, baseball, and football both years. He was Captain of the football team, and as a wrestler won the Individual Prep School Championship in 1939. Smith wrestled in the first PIAA State Wrestling Tournament held in Rec. Hall at Penn State in 1938. While attending Penn Stale, Smith lettered in Wrestling and Baseball. He also won the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship at 155 pounds in 1945. Smith has been honored by the Wyoming Seminary Hall of Fame, 1973; the District XI Hall of Fame, 1973; the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, 1975; the District VI Hall of Fame, 1991; the Allen High School Hall of Fame, 1979; and the Lower Anthracite Hall of Fame, 1990. For these reasons and more, Glenn Smith is honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a "Lifetime Service to Wrestling" award recipient.
