Ed Luksik

Ed Luksik competed as a scholastic wrestler in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and as a collegian at Slippery Rock University, where he placed in the Pennsylvania State College Championships in 1961.

As the varsity wrestling coach at Deer Park High School from 1963-1974 and 1978-1996 his teams compiled 213 dual meet wins and five league championships while his 1995 team won the Class B Suffolk County title.

Ed was named Coach of the Year in 1973 and received the Suffolk County Grand Master Coaching Award in 1996.

Many of Ed’s wrestlers achieved tremendous individual success, including 60 league champions and 11 county champions, 18 county runners-up and county place-winners. Three of his wrestlers - Tom Decker, Angelo Zegarelli and Sal Cusumano - compiled over 100 wins. Two of his wrestlers were voted Suffolk County Most Outstanding Wrestler while Ray Downey earned New York State Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in 1985. At the state level, 11 of his wrestlers placed at the intersectional tournament and two were New York State champions.

Nick Gallo won a Suffolk County championship and was all-state before continuing his career at Hofstra University, where he won an NCAA championship and was named Outstanding Wrestler in 1977.

Ed coached a wrestler in the New York State high school finals in each of the four decades he coached.

He started and coached the Deer Park Kids wrestling program from 1966 to 1969.

Perhaps one of the finest endorsements of Ed's incluence has been the number of former wrestlers who went on to become fine high school coaches on Long Island, including Mat Bernstein, Ray Downey, Joe Goona, Howie Greenblat, Paul Klyap, and Bob Schwarz.

Ed has been married to his wife, Angela, for 38 years and they have six children and five grandchildren.
