While it was said the British victory at Waterloo had is foundation on the playing field of Eton, Future American victories in the battle may trace their foundation to the wrestling room the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD.

And the odds are good for future American heroes where coached by Reg Wicks. Wicks coached 26 years at the Naval Academy, assisting National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Distinguished Member, Ed Peery  from 1974-1987, before taking the reins of the program from 1987-2000.

During his administration the Midshipmen were 174-60-5, winning the EIWA’s tournament in 1990 From 1989 to 1995 the Midshipmen placed in the top three of the EIWA’S, including runner-up finishes in 1988,91,92,94. Wicks coached 17 EIWA champions, 35 NCAA qualifiers and six NCAA place winners.

He was EIWA Coach of the Year in 1990.

Three of his wrestlers the NAVAL ACADEMY SWORD awarded to the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Academy.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mankato State University, Minnesota and coached the University of Wisconsin, Stevens, Point, for the three years before joining the staff at the Naval Academy.

Wicks graduate from Iowa State University in 1968 he was the NCAA Division I National Champion at 168 lbs. He was also the Cyclones team captain the same year. He compiled a 37-5-1 record and placed 1st and 2nd in 1967, 1968 at the Midlands Tournament. He was also a Time Big 8 Place winner.

He has also served as an official in Minnesota (1969-70), Wisconsin (1971-74), Maryland (1974-79.

His overall coached record stands at 200-80-6).
