Brian Tompkins

Brian Tompkins is a man of substance, gentle strength and a well-respected teacher and wrestling coach for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, at Sleepy Hollow High School, since 1975. As a legendary leader of the program, he has sought to build confidence, character and excellence in his athletes both on and off the mats and beyond. Brian has been involved in the sport wrestling for over 50 years. He began his wrestling career as a competitor at Sleepy Hollow, going from modified to varsity, and culminating it by earning two trips to the States and ultimately placing fourth, at 190 pounds, in the 1970 New York State Wrestling Championships. Brian continued and exemplified his wrestling career at West Chester University by winning the 177 pound Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships and qualifying him for the 1972 NCAA Division I Nationals in College Park, Maryland. After college, Brian returned to his alma mater to begin his teaching and coaching career. He taught physical education and special education for over 40 years before retiring from teaching; however, he continues to lead the wrestling team with distinction and epitomizes what it means to be a top notch coach. Throughout his coaching years, Brian remains humble and is reluctant to cite statistics and honors he has earned. He successfully coached both team and individuals to championships. The Tompkins led teams have amassed over 350 dual meet victories and several team titles. Brian has coached 13 New York State Wrestling Championships place winners and four finalists, who earned three state titles. His champions are Juan Carlos Garcia (112 lbs. & 119 lbs.) in 1990 & 1991; and Carlos Jimenez (98 lbs.) in 1989. Brian has garnered several Section I coach of the year honors. His coaching career is perfectly summed up by one of his former wrestlers who noted that Tompkins is still a part of my everyday life and my moral and professional compass. In service to his community, Brian has a unique perspective as a lifelong resident of the area. Together with his wife Jeanette, they raised their children: Lauren, Connor and Ryan to be successful members of the community. Both Ryan (Modified) and Connor (Junior Varsity/Assistant) have the power and pleasure of coaching wrestling alongside with their dad. Outside of wrestling and for over 50 years, Brian runs a swimming pool for 350 families and is a diving coach where the Tompkins live. Both in and out of the community, Brian goes above beyond to assist individuals and makes a difference in the lives of others every day. Coach Brian Tompkins has tirelessly given of himself to others and possesses the highest degree of honor. He is a true friend to the sport of wrestling. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame welcomes Brian Tompkins for induction into the class of 2019 and recipient of its Lifetime Service Award.
