Paul Loverde
Paul Loverde started his wrestling career in 1962 at Mergenthaler High School. He followed in his older brother's footsteps, Phil, who was a three time MSA Champion under coach Bill Anderson and Elmer Dize, both members of the Maryland Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Paul also became an accomplished wrestler placing third in the MSA in 1964 and winning the championship at 112 lbs in 1965. Twenty five years later his son, Joe, won the MSA Tournament at 112 lbs. Paul was awarded a four year scholarship to the University of Baltimore in 1965, where he wrestled under head coach Bill Owings. Paul was voted the Unsung Hero in 1966. After his wrestling career was over, Paul turned his attention to coaching and refereeing. He coached the Catonsville and Arbutus Junior League Teams for six years. But Paul is much better known for his officiating in a long tenure with the MWOA (Maryland Wrestling Officials Association). Besides being a top level official, Paul served in many leadership capacities which included; 2 terms as President, 2 terms as Vice President in charge of applicants, Secretary of MWOA, Assignment Committee and Banquet Chairman. Paul officiated most major tournaments including; MSA, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Harford County and Cecil County. He also officiated at the regional tournaments and at the state tournament. Paul was highly respected as an official by both coaches and wrestlers. His effort, competence and knowledge of the sport earned him that respect. Paul was awarded The Special Service Award in 2001 and the Gold Whistle Award in 2012 from the MWOA. Only 15 members of the MWOA have received this award. He is also an Honorary Life Member of the MWOA. Paul taught in the Anne Arundel County School System from 1970 - 2001. He has been married to his wife, Yvonne, for 51 years and they have two children: Gina (51) and Joseph (46). Paul and Yvonne have 5 grandchildren: Sarah (24), Brendan (21), Sofia (15), Van (13) and Francesca (7).
