Travis Fiser, head wrestling coach of Grundy HS for 23 seasons, has just won his 11th state title (this year in Division 1), elevating the Golden Wave to a level never before achieved in Virginia"”22 state wrestling championships, surpassing legendary Billy Martin, Sr.'s 21 for Granby and Great Bridge's 19 (mostly won by Martin's sons). This achievement has been made even sweeter by the fourth state title for his son, Gabe, one of our Student-Athletes of the Year. Now 50, Coach Fiser replaced Hall-of-Famer Kevin Dresser, both of whom have a Dan Gable/Iowa connection. After graduating from Iowa Valley HS, Travis earned NJCAA All-American Honors at Kirkwood Community College, before joining Gable's Hawkeyes as a two-time All-American and member of two NCAA champion teams (1991-92). Upon graduation, he wrestled for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, developed his freestyle skills, and became a Ladder member of USA Wrestling. Hired in 1996 at Grundy, Travis has produced many outstanding wrestlers, among them 35 state champions, including 20 multiple state champs (three "four-timers" and five "three-timers"), two National Freestyle, and two National Folkstyle Champions. He enjoys competing at home and out-of-state, showing particular loyalty and winning performances at each division of the Virginia Duals: National, American, and Black and Blue. "I know how I wanted to be treated," he says of his coaching philosophy in an interview for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. "I enjoy the challenge of taking them from the beginning. . . .I like them to end on a good note. I like them to say 'I wish I had another year.'" Holder of a B.A. in history, he serves as a Sunday School teacher at Vansant Baptist Church. He has been blessed to be married to Jackie for 20 years. They have two children, Gabe and Alexa.
