Mary Jo and Ray Glen Stucker

Mary Jo and Ray Glen Stucker have supported wrestling for 45 years and continue to do so. In 1958 they moved to Shawnee and decided they had to have wrestling in the schools if they were to make Shawnee a permanent home. In 1965 they founded a youth wrestling program at the YMCA with participants from Shawnee and surrounding areas. For five years Ray and Mary Jo were both coaches for the YMCA team, and Mary Jo also served as scorer for dual matches. In 1968 they organized a Takedown Club and the first of 30 annual tournaments, all of which they helped run. They developed the "Shawnee System" for numbering matches by mat which has been adopted by many youth groups and is still widely used. Ray and Mary Jo directed a steady campaign to get wrestling into the Shawnee school system. In 1975 the Stuckers finally won their battle and Shawnee became a wrestling school. While the Stuckers have always been a team, their areas of influence vastly differ. Ray provided the leadership that built the programs and Mary Jo is seen "at work" with the score book and the score table at home and abroad. The Stuckers have been jointly recognized by the Shawnee YMCA for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership and Service in 1969 and 1973. In 1976 the Shawnee Wrestlers presented them with an appreciation award. In 1984 and 1994 the Shawnee Takedown Club recognized the couple for their outstanding service. In 1980 an award was created in their honor to go to the wrestling family which exhibits the greatest dedication to Shawnee wrestling at any level. In appreciation to Ray and Mary Jo for twenty-five years of loyal dedication and the creation of the Shawnee Wrestling program, the Shawnee High School Physical Education facility was named the Stucker Wrestling Complex.
