Ed Arima

1971-1997 Sumner High School Deceased September 1997 Ed Arima was born and raised in Auburn, wrestling under Hall of Fame coach Gene Cerino at Auburn High School where he graduated in 1965. Ed continued his wrestling at Western Washington University under coaches Jim Smith and Boyd Long. Arima was hired at Sumner High School in 1971 as a Horticulture teacher, where he spent the next 26 years before he passed away suddenly in September of 1997. In his 26 years at Sumner High School Arima spent his first seven years as an assistant wrestling coach and the last nineteen as head coach of the Sumner High School wrestling program. In 1996 Ed was selected as the 3A Wrestling Coach of the Year and was the SPSL Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1983. He coached 81 state qualifiers at Sumner High School including 24 medal winners and 9 individual state champions. Three of his wrestlers were High School All-Americans and three time state champion David Olmsted captured a Junior World Championship in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in addition to being the NFHS National High School Greco-Roman champion. The Spartan wrestling teams were league champions in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Ed Arima also served as an assistant football coach for Sumner High School where he did much of the scouting for the varsity team and served as the Assistant Manager of Public Relations for the Pay & Pak Softball team. As a teacher he received the FFA Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 1996 and the Master Teacher Award in 1995. Coach Arima was an active member of the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association and was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999. Coach Arima gave unselfishly to Sumner High School athletics, whether it was a wrestler who needed shoes, dinner or some fatherly advice. Though he never had children of his own, Ed's mother, uncle, wrestlers and students were his family. Phil Lyonais, a former wrestler and assistant coach wrote, "As a coach at Sumner High School when Ed passed away, I was able to see the positive effect that Coach Arima had on so many people. To this day people still tell stories about what Coach Arima had done for them or their son. I know he had a profound effect upon my life."
