Ron Oglesby

Ron Oglesby has served in every capacity in the field of wrestling. He began his career at Oak Lawn High School, where he was a two-time state placewinner for IWCOA Hall of Famer Jim Craig. He then entered Joliet Junior College, where he was a two-time All-American for another IWCOA Hall of Famer, Henry Pillard. Joliet finished in the top five in the National Junior College championships both years Ron competed. He then went on to Winona State in Minnesota and placed second in the NAIA National Championships as his team place third. Post-college competition found Ron wrestling for the Mayor Daley Youth Foundation, placing several times in the AAU National Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at a time when the MDYF won several National AAU and United State Wrestling Federation (now USA Wrestling) national championships. Ron won a USWF national title in 1970 and was invited to compete in the World Cup. He also placed in the Midlands tournament. Ron spent two years of active duty in the Army, but his coaching career spanned many levels and many years. Starting as an assistant at Winona State, he then became head wrestling coach at Longfellow Junior High School in LaCrosse, WI. Moving home to Illinois, Ron served as an assistant to IWCOA Hall of Famer Tom Heniff at Oak Lawn Richards. While at Richards, he was named assistant coach of the year in the SICA Conference. Ron then was named head coach at Shepard High School. In 1985 he moved to Mt. Carmel in Chicago to become an assistant to IWCOA Hall of Famer Bill Weick. During his tenure at Mt. Carmel, Ron was nominated as IWCOA Assistant Coach of the Year several times and received that award in 1993 and the Caravan won three IHSA State Championships, also placing second and fourth. In 2000 Ron became the assistant to IWCOA Hall of Famer Leo Kocher at the University of Chicago. Ron is currently back coaching at Brother Rice High School in Chicago. For many years Ron was active in the Illinois Wrestling Federation summer wrestling programs and was an assistant coach at the Junior Nationals several times. He has been involved with helping coach 100 state qualifiers, many placewinners and 26 state champions. Wrestlers Ron has coached have claimed six NCAA Division I National Championship, and one became an Olympian. Ron has been a referee for the IWF and a FILA Official for USA Wrestling. He has officiated at the Olympic trials, junior world trials, the World open trials, the Canadian Cup in Toronto and 10 senior Open National Championships as well as several Junior National tournaments and IWF State tournaments. He was also the Head Freestyle Coach for the 1980-81 Team Illinois. As a freshman football coach at Mt. Carmel, Ron saw his teams win 100 of 106 games and claim 10 Catholic League Championships. Ron was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2011 he served as the Grand Marshal for the IHSA Individual State Finals Grand March. Ron resides in Alsip with Gloria, his wife of 34 years. They have two children.
