As a high school student in Farmingdale, Laura Maddock assisted Coach Irv Apgar by becoming a scorekeeper for his wrestling team.

When Laura went off to college at the State University at Brockport, she approached head coach Don Murray about being involved with the wrestling program, noting her experience as a high school scorekeeper.

She soon found herself involved with the daily operations of the team. Laura posted the practice schedule, ran drills, played music and kept time. Coach Murray says that she kept the team and him in one piece. Laura became team manager and was responsible for arranging travel, meals and hotels while accompanying the team on the road.

As she became more knowledgeable, she was often sent to scout opposing teams while also attending seeding meetings and tournaments.

Laura learned how to run and score tournaments and during her four-year tenure she had the opportunity to participate in the operation of the New York State College Championships, the NCAA Division III Championships, and the Eastern Regional Olympic Trials which were being held at Brockport University.

It was at Brockport that Laura met Tom Maddock, a 142-pound wrestler from Valley Stream who later became her husband.

Laura continued her interest in running wrestling programs and began keeping the scorebook for Tom's teams at Great Neck South High School, Floral Park High School, Valley Stream South High School, and Valley Stream North High School. She became more involved with Nassau County wrestling and became the treasurer for the Nassau County Wrestling Coaches Association.

She also had the privilege to be part of the Long Island Wrestling Officials Association and a representative at the New York State High School State Championships. Laura has continued her role for Section VIII for the past five years working the Division I and Division II state tournaments.

Over the years, Laura and Tom have been a great team not only in the wrestling community, but also on the home front where their two sons became successful high school wrestlers. Scott, the eldest, was a captain of the Massapequa High School team and led them to a state championship. Josh, also a Massapequa High School team captain, received all-county honors and was named his school's Outstanding Wrestler as a senior.
