Dwight Buzbee

Born and raised in Coosa County, Alabama, Dwight Buzbee enrolled at Benjamin Russell High School as a freshman. There he was introduced to wrestling by Hall of Fame coach Charles Lee, who also coached him in football. Buzbee would wrestle at 185 pounds and heavyweight on teams that won two state titles and finished as state runner-ups twice. After graduating in 1971, Dwight attended Auburn University. As a student he began to referee high school wrestling in the local area. He officiated in his first state tournament in 1976 while still a student. In 1977 Dwight returned to Alexander City, Alabama where he spent his entire 37-year career as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He earned his MS degree in school administration from Troy University. During his seven seasons as wrestling coach, the Wildcats of Benjamin Russell won state championships in 1981, 1982, and 1983. He coached seven individual state champions and 25 place winners. After resigning as wrestling coach, Dwight returned to officiating. He officiated in 30 state tournaments, three national tournaments, and served as AHSAA District Director for two seasons. In 2016 he was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame. Dwight and his wife, Jane, have three children: Misha (Rob), John (Sheena), and Ellie (Matthew), and four grandsons Mitchell and Parker Ratcliff (10 and 8), Silas Buzbee (2), and Toby Yeager (2). Since retiring, they enjoy traveling, supporting Auburn Athletics, golf, and are active in their church and Emmaus community.
