Bob Wood
Robert E. and Ann V. Wood, both lifelong residents of Prince George County, VA, were "high school sweethearts." Married in 1974, they were blessed with three sons, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Daniel"”all of them three-sport athletes, all of them wrestlers. Bob and Ann became one of those "contributor" couples that have enriched and advanced the sport of wrestling in Virginia. In 1992, they started the Prince George Youth Wrestling Program, joining the Chesterfield/Hopewell Youth Wrestling League. Two years later, they inaugurated the "Royal Kids Classic" youth wrestling tournament, which continues today to raise money for Prince George youth and high school wrestling programs. The years that followed found them helping around the state to set up, pair, and officiate pre- and post-season tournaments, many times working at separate locations. Bob volunteered as an assistant high school coach at Varina High School for two years, creating yet another tournament, an annual JV season-ender that also prospers today. He moved on to Prince George High School, where he has assisted the Royals' program for 18 years. He then opened up a new avenue of service, signing up in the mid '90s with the Central Virginia Wrestling Officials Association, while adding the office of treasurer to his officiating duties. Meanwhile, Ann was in demand as a high school scorekeeper, entrusted with in-season events and the district and regional tournaments of the Richmond area. In 1998, she joined Bob in the Virginia chapter of USA Wrestling; Bob was treasurer (1998-2011), while Ann was the State Membership Director. Outside of Virginia, they have worked numerous USA Southeast Regional wrestling events, from Boone NC to Atlanta, GA, with Bob officiating and Ann administering the tournament by pairing the matches. She and Bob were also a wrestling "power couple" when she paired and Bob officiated at the USA Wrestling Freestyle and Greco Cadet/Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND. Before they were married, Bob said to Ann: "I will try to do anything you ask, just don't ask me to give up sports." Ann did not just get out of the way; she ran beside him the entire journey.
