In 1960, Wiley Glynn Stowe graduated from Central High School, located in Phenix City, Alabama. During his high school career, Stowe lettered in wrestling, track, and football. Upon completion of the 1959 football season, he was chosen as an Alabama All-State Football Player and played for the South in the All-Star game.

Stowe attended the University of Georgia his freshman year. He transferred to the University of Chattanooga (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga), where he played football for the Moccasins, was on the wrestling team, and majored in health and physical education.

After graduating from Chattanooga, he taught social studies at Fort Payne High School, and developed the Wildcats first wrestling program in 1965-66.

The following year, Stowe joined the Butler High School football coaching staff, led by renowned head coach John Meadows. With a passion for the sport of wrestling, Coach Stowe introduced it to Butler High School and won four team state championships (1970, 1973, 1975 and 1977). In 1976, he was chosen as one of eight nominees for the National High School Coach of the Year.

After leaving his position at Butler and transferring to Grissom High School, Coach Stowe assisted his former wrestler Daryle Qualls in coaching wrestling at Athens High School from 1991 to 1994. During that time, Athens won three state wrestling championships (1991, 1993 and 1994) and was state runner-up in 1992.

Twenty-five individual state champions were the result of his 12 years of coaching at Butler and Athens. Many of these went on to wrestle at the college level.

Coach Stowe's love for the sport of wrestling continues today, as he shares his wrestling knowledge and strategies with fellow coaches and youth interested in the sport. He recently assisted the first wrestling coach at New Hope High School in initiating, developing, and strengthening their program.

Coach Stowe has devoted countless hours of his life to positively impacting the sport of wrestling and the young men who have crossed his path in the process.
