Bob Fehrs

Bob Fehrs graduated from the Milton Hershey School with a 43-4 record, and was a three-time National Prep School finalist and two-time Outstanding Wrestler.

Fehrs’s father passed away when he was young. Because of this event, and various other reasons, including that he was the youngest of three and by his own choice, Fehrs enrolled in Milton Hershey School, which at that time, was only open to poor orphan boys. Fehrs credits the school for teaching him discipline, hard work, and giving him a basic foundation for the rest of his life.

He earned a wrestling scholarship and graduated from the University of Michigan, after a very successful wrestling career, finishing with a 67-6-1 record.

A three-time Big Ten Conference champion and the Outstanding Wrestler in 1966, Fehrs was a three-time NCAA finalist, losing all three years to the legendary Mike Caruso, a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, of Lehigh University. Fehrs and Caruso co-captained the first-ever East-West College Wrestling Classic.

Bob served as an assistant coach at University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University and was head coach at Muskegon Community College and Northern Michigan University before moving to the University of Nebraska, where he had his finest seasons.

During his tenure at Northern Michigan from 1975-78, he coached 22 All-Americans, including two NCAA Division I All-Americans and two NCAA Division II national champions, while recruiting several wrestlers now in the NMU Sports Hall of Fame. Each of his four teams finished in the Top 20 at the NCAA Division II Championships (13th, 19th, 13th and 6th) and Fehrs was nominated for the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 1978.

In seven years at Nebraska, Bob guided his teams to 95 wins and four Top-10 NCAA finishes while coaching NCAA champions Bill Scherr and Jim Scherr in 1984.

Bob sustained a broken back in an airplane accident while flying to recruit prospects, which led to the end of his career at Nebraska.

He later coached at Milford High School, Lincoln East High School and Milton Hershey School, compiling a career record 125-59-2.

Bob served as the Head of the Middle Division at Milton Hershey School. As the head of the Division, Fehrs was responsible for the student homes, their staff, the educational programs for 5th through 8th grades, and the general welfare of the students, which now included girls, including arranging health care and counseling. By far Fehr’s most significant accomplishment was the $125 million, four-year renovation of the iconic of Milton Hershey School facility.

Bob has won numerous other awards and in the past year he retired as a school administrator at Milton Hershey School and served as a volunteer wresting assistant.
