Blackwell native Mark Leen began coaching wrestling at Shawnee High School after graduating from Oklahoma State University. When he started as head coach in 1979, Shawnee was one of the worst teams in the state, but Leen built the program into not just one of the state's best, but one of the nation's best. He coached Shawnee's first individual state champion, Shawn Davis, in 1984. In 1986, the Wolves won their first-ever state team title, while compiling a 56-match win streak from 1984 to 87. Leen was named Wrestling USA Magazine's National Coach of the Year for 1986 and his team was honored with the nation's top ranking. By 1987, Leen left Shawnee for Garden City Community College where he compiled a 98-3 dual record that included a national record 81-match win streak, 12 national champions and 49 All-Americans. He led the Broncbusters to their first national championship in any sport, then repeated twice, winning titles in 1992, '94 and '95. In each of those years, he was named National Junior College Coach-of-the-Year. Leen left Kansas in 1995 to coach at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. In six seasons with the Division I Mocs, he won three Southern Conference championships before retiring from coaching in 2000 to go into private business. For creating a culture of excellence at every coaching stop, Mark Leen is honored with the 2015 Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award by the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
