Like many youngsters in his community, Rex Edgar became a standout wrestler at tradition-rich Perry High School. Competing at 148 lbs., he won the Geary Tournament as a junior and senior, and at the state championships, finished fourth as a junior and third as a senior. Although he was all-conference in football and all-state in baseball, he chose to attend the University of Oklahoma on a wrestling scholarship. A threeyear letterman, Edgar was a Big-Seven champion at 167 lbs., an All- American, placing third at the NCAA tournament, and a member of the 1957 NCAA championship team, half of which were former Perry wrestlers. After graduating from OU in 1958 with a degree in accounting, Edgar returned to Perry and began coaching. From 1959-69, his teams won six state championships and crowned 24 individual state champs. He was Coach-of-the-Year in 1963, '64, '65 and '67. In 1969, Bank of Oklahoma recruited him as Vice-President and Manager for Trust Operations. His banking career continued with stints in Ponca City, Del City and the FDIC, until his retirement in 2004. Although Edgar left the coaching profession, he never truly left the wrestling world, volunteering as a coach and financially supporting Perry wrestling. For his continued passion for the sport, Rex Edgar is honored with the 2015 Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award from the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
