JoeGustainis graduated from Windsor High School in 1959 where he competed in football and wrestling. He wrestled in the first Windsor Tournament and it made such an impression on him that he later used it as model when he established the Caledonia Tournament. He continued his education at SUNY Oswego where he majored in Industrial Arts. He was captain and SUNY Tournament Champion in 1963 at 177 lb. Joe was fortunate to have been coached both in high school and college by legendary of Fame Coach Jim Howard. Joe taught Industrial Arts and Driver Education from 1964 - 1983 at Caledonia Mumford Central School but he was best known for his outstanding wrestling coaching career. teams had several undefeated seasons and at least 139 dual meet victories. Caledonia Mumford was small school so that record is especially noteworthy because Joe always scheduled larger schools with outstanding wrestling programs for his non-league meets. He sought the most competitive tournaments, as the Spencerport Tournament, so his wrestlers would have the opportunity to face outstanding wrestlers. All of this prepared his wrestlers to be successful in post-season competition. Fifty of his wrestlers were Livingston County League Champions and 30 were Sectional Champions. His team won the Sectional Team Championship 3 times. While Joe was coaching, the NY State Wrestling Tournament had one division and only one wrestler per weight class so it is impressive that many of his small school wrestlers defeated large school wrestlers to qualify for the States. Eleven of his wrestlers qualified and placed under the one division format. One of those was his son, Joe, and another was, Robin Scott Parker, named the Outstanding Wrestler at the NY State Wrestling Tournament in 1976. In 1983, Joe left teaching to pursue a career in the business world. He had started to officiate in 1975 and enabled him to continue his wrestling career. For a time, he was responsible for training new officials those candidates benefited from his coaching and officiating experience. He served as president and interpreter of the Wrestling Officials Association of Section 5 from 1985-1987. Joe contributed a lot to wrestling during his lifetime of service. He started an annual tournament at Caledonia. He ran numerous summer tournaments which gave his high school wrestlers and others an opportunity to wrestle during the off season. He always wanted to improve the caliber of wrestling in Section 5 so he brought in outstanding college coaches for clinics and he was always willing to share techniques with other coaches. He also inspired several of his wrestlers to go on to coach or referee. Joe's contributions and service have been recognized. His honors include being voted Section 5 Wrestling Coach of the Year, induction into the Livingston County Wrestling Hall of Fame, Life Membership Award from the Wrestling Officials Association of Section 5 and induction into the Section 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame. Joe has been married to his wife, Ann, for 51 years. They have two children, Joe and Karen, and two grandchildren.
