John Roselli

John Roselli was a 1960 graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, NY where he competed in football and intramural wrestling. McQuaid did not have a wrestling team at that time. He graduated from St. John Fisher College and earned his master's degree from SUNY Brockport. John returned to McQuaid for the next 33 years where he taught social studies and also served as Vice Principal for 16 years. He took over a newly started wrestling team as the varsity coach and built an outstanding program from 1964 to 1988. In addition to coaching wrestling at McQuaid, he also served as the assistant football coach. Before the City-Catholic League was established in 1971, John's McQuaid wrestling teams successfully competed as an independent school against the best city and Monroe County teams. His wrestlers competed in the State Catholic High School Championships and many won championships. Overall, John Roselli's wrestling teams had a dual meet record of 264-58-4. His teams won 15 City Catholic League championships. After Catholic schools were permitted to compete in the Section 5 Tournament, his wrestlers won 15 titles. One, Rich Salamone, was a New York State Tournament Champion and 5 others were place winners. Many McQuaid wrestlers went on to become successful collegiate wrestlers and two were Olympic alternates. John's contributions and service have been recognized. His honors include being voted Section 5 Wrestling Coach of the Year, induction into the Section 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame, McQuaid Jesuit Athletic Hall of Fame and City Catholic Wrestling Association Hall of Fame. Twice he was selected as Teacher of the Year. More important than the wrestling statistics and honors are the lasting impressions John made on his wrestlers. At his retirement banquet, his former wrestlers had words of thanks and praise for him. Not only did they recognize his impact on their wrestling careers but on their lives. In nominating John Roselli for the Hall of Fame, Lem Rogers, one of his former wrestlers who is now a Rochester teacher and coach, wrote that "Coach Roselli was not just a mentor, but has served as a model for me in all aspects of my life. Not a week goes by that I don't call on some lesson I learned from coach. One of the greatest lessons I learned from him was that of commitment to excellence, to family to yourself and to fulfill your commitments." Another former wrestler, Phil Lanzatella who was a National Champion and Olympic Alternate, wrote about Coach Roselli's sincerity and compassion, his ability to convince high school freshmen to start wrestling and motivating them to "catch up" and compete with wrestlers from other schools who had started to learn wrestling fundamentals years earlier. He emphasized the respect that Coach Roselli earned from all his wrestlers and concluded "I've had many coaches in the 26 years I competed nationally and internationally and John Roselli would be at the top of my list." John has been married to his wife, Nancy, for 50 years. They have 4 sons, John, Paul, Mark, and Michael and 10 grandchildren. It is with great honor that the New York Upstate Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recognized John for all his achievements on and off the mat. He certainly epitomizes excellence in all sense of the word.
