Dr. Howard Wescott was a Reed College graduate with a PhD in mathematics from Columbia University and an NCAA Division I wrestling coach. He assembled a team at Portland State University that was nothing short of legendary. His teams in the mid-to-late 60s were packed with all stars, including Rick Sanders (2 time NCAA champion, NAAU champion, world champion and Olympic silver medalist), Mas Yatabe (2 time NCAA runner-up), Chuck Seal (NCAA 3rd place), Bob Bergen (NCAA All American and NAAU runner-up) and Marlin Grahn (NAAU runner up). His teams won the 1967 NCAA D2 title and placed fifth in the 1965, second in 1968 and sixth in D1 in 1968. Coach Wescott was selected to coach the 1968 NCAA D1 West All-Star team.
