Marty Rusnak wrestled at Philipsburg-Osceola High School, graduating in 1960.

At Slippery Rock, he was a four-year starter on the wrestling team, and was undefeated in dual meets in his sophomore year.

He graduated in 1964, then became a teacher and head coach at Altoona High School, staying his entire 36-year career.

He retired in 2001 with a record of 317-222-2, including an undefeated (14-0) season in 1976.

Marty and his wife Mary Ann raised three sons, Martin, John, and Mark.

Until she passed away in October 2013, Mary Ann was a constant supporter of the team, and was always in the gym when Altoona was on the mat.

Marty coached 44 district champions, 16 regional champions and two state champions. He had 51 state qualifiers and 13 medalists.

Marty's first state champion was Brad Benson in 1973. Benson played football at Penn State and later became a member of the New York Giants Super Bowl champion team.

Marty's other state champion was Steve Maurey. He also coached John Orr, who was a two-time NCAA runner-up for Princeton University.

Marty was president of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association, and the District 6 Coaches Association.

In 1989, he received Scholastic Magazine's National High School Gold Award.

Marty is a member of the District 6 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Halls of Fame.

He served as Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling All-Area Tournament director from 1980-1986.

Marty still remains active in the sport, participating at district, regional and state levels. Marty continues to live in Altoona.
