Doug Manley

In 2010 Mr. Manley, an Akron native, retired as an active prep wrestling official. That marked the end of a distinguished 30-year career on the mat that started in high school as a two time State Meet qualifier. He started his officiating career while in high school helping with elementary tournaments and from there he developed into a highly respected and sought after official. Known for his expectation of good sportsmanship from wrestlers and coaches, his command of the sport's rules paved the way to him being selected 18 consecutive times as an official at the Traditional State Meet. He was on the Championship Saturday mat 16 years during that time. Additionally, he was also on the whistle six times in the State Dual Team Tournament. He officiated several Iowa North-South All Stars Meets and three times he worked the Disney Scholastic Duals in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Manley's expertise in the sport is seen in many other avenues. He has been an IHSAA rules interpreter for the last three years and has been an evaluator of officials at the State Tournament the last four years. In 1999 and 2008 he was selected as the Iowa Official-of-the-Year by the IWCOA and 10 times was named the Northwest Iowa District Official-of-the-Year, and he has served that group as the chairperson for ten years. In 2005 he was named as the NFOA Official of the Year. In 2009 he was named to the IHSAA Officials' Hall of Fame. For the past 10 years he has been the supervisor of officials and tournament director for the NAIA National Collegiate Wrestling Tournament, and the supervisor of officials for the Brute-Adidas Nationals since 2005.
