John Siegal

Coach Siegel has experienced the full gamut of the sport as a prep and collegiate wrestler, a successful head and assistant coach, and as the parent of a State Champion. A graduate of Bettendorf, he wrestled four years under Hall of Fame coach Franc Freeman. He earned his collegiate degree at Coe College in 1972 and captained the 1972 Kohawks. A 42 year coaching career started in 1973 at Morning Sun when he authored a sterling 143-17-3 record that included a 31-dual meet victory chain. He mentored 55 State Meet qualifiers including 25 place winners that included four state champions and five runner-ups before Morning Sun closed its high school doors in 1991. He was named Class 1A Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1989. He has stayed connected to the sport as an assistant coach at neighboring schools. At Wapello he helped them win the 1992 Class 2A Championship. Then in 10 years at Columbus Junction, with Coach Bill Plein he helped them to the 1995 and 1997 traditional state titles and three Dual Team State Championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999. He assisted Mark Chiri 10 years at New London and helped them to a runner-up finish in 2008. One of his career highlights came at New London/Winfield-Mt, Union where he coached his son Johnny to a 2007 state championship. He helped coach five other state champions there. All told in his career he was associated with 88 state qualifiers, 56 medal winners and 13 state champions. Five of his wrestlers went on to compete at the NCAA Division 1 level. Moreover, his teams earned multiple State Academic Awards and ranked high in overall sportsmanship by athletes, coaches, and fans. He is a 40-year elementary teacher and continues to coach junior high wrestling. He is a 2013 IHSAA Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee.
