Dr. Yoo Keun "Tom" Kim
March 10, 1947 - January 16, 2026
Dr. Yoo Keun "Tom" Kim was the founder of the Kim Health Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1993, he founded the Free Medical Clinic of America as a Christian ministry reflecting his deep faith in Jesus Christ and his lifelong mission of service. Partnering with area churches and communities, Dr. Kim helped establish three free medical clinics across East Tennessee, providing compassionate care to those most in need.
Strengthened by his faith, Dr. Kim became known as a true “Renaissance doctor,” placing no limits on service when health and safety were at stake. He was known to pull a tooth when needed, fix a patient’s car with medical tape, and even drive patients to the hospital in his own vehicle during emergencies. His vision, tireless work ethic, and unwavering commitment inspired a dedicated community of volunteer physicians and healthcare professionals who shared his mission to ensure access to care for low-income and uninsured individuals.
As a child, Dr. Kim escaped the Korean War with his family. He went on to build a life that embodied the American dream for so many immigrants, choosing a path defined by service, compassion, and giving back. His life reflected the highest ideals of American hope and service.
On January 25, 2023, marking 30 years of service, the clinic was renamed the Kim Health Center in honor of Dr. Kim’s extraordinary legacy and lasting impact on the community.
