For 26 of the 31 years he coached, Carson DeJarnatt led the wrestling teams at Sterling Township High School. His squads won 346 dual meets, which ranks among the state's best. Sixty-seven of Sterling's competitors qualified for the individual state finals, including 22 place-winners. His teams won 14 conference championships, 13 regional titles and five sectional titles, and they also placed second in the state tournament in 1964 and 1973, while finishing fifth in 1968. Carson was also highly instrumental in the development of the Sterling Park District wrestling program -- one of the finest in the state -- and one that functioned for more than 18 years. He served on the board of the IWCOA, holding positions of secretary and treasurer at various times during his tenure. A two-time Illinois Coach of the Year, Carson was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 1978 and honored as a Grand Marshal for the 1990 state tournament. The IWCOA recognized him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Carson also coached his three sons in wrestling and his daughter in track, and all qualified for their respective state tournaments. Carson died in 1995, but he is remembered and recognized by Sterling's annual "Carson DeJarnatt" Memorial Wrestling Tournament.
