H. Clay McEldowney
Clay has been involved with wrestling his entire adult life. Grew up in Clinton & attended North Hunterdon High, wrestled for Harold Vandermark as a freshmen before transferring to The Hill School following his freshmen year. At The Hill School, graduating 1965, wrestling co-captain & 148 lb. National Prep champ in his senior year & undefeated in dual meets over two years of varsity competition against principally east PA high schools. Princeton University, wrestled 4 years, captain freshman & senior years; BSE - 1969 (Civil Engineering), MSCE from NJ Institute of Technology -1973. Refereed NJ high school wrestling 5-years; coached North Hunterdon H.S. midget wrestling (1985-90); edited Princeton Wrestling News 16 years & served as chairman of the Friends of Princeton Wrestling (1990-1996), during which he led a successful effort to restore varsity wrestling after it was discontinued in 1993; & continues as board member of FPW. This alumni effort conducted a campaign raising a $3 million endowment to insure the continuation of the program, which in 2014 will complete its 109th continuous year of varsity wrestling competition, and subsequently to raise funds to renovate the Class of '58 Wrestling Room. Chair of the Princeton Wrestling 100th Anniversary Committee (1905-2005); served as panelist at Princeton University on the topics, "Princeton, a Jock School: Reality or a Dream?" (1999), "Title IX Bout" (2003), and "The Future of Varsity Intercollegiate Sports at Princeton" (2004). Since 2002 served as board member of the American Sports Council, the leading organization working for Title IX reform, whose mission is to preserve and promote the student-athlete experience and which has been successful in helping save collegiate athletic programs. His efforts on behalf of wrestling earned him the Impact Award in 2012 from Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN), a leading publication covering high school, collegiate & international wrestling, in recognition of his involvement with working to prevent the discontinuation of wrestling & other "lesser priority" sports at many colleges. Served on the National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Wrestling Task Force to Protect Wrestling & the Board of Directors of the National Coalition of Athletics Equity (NCAE), honored 1999 by the National Coalition for Athletics Equity as representing what is best in sport & why we need to provide opportunities for all who wish to participate; selected the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) "Man of the Year" (1999), EIWA Hall of Fame, 2013. VP - Media & founder, Hill Wrestling Assn., 2010 - Present, The Hill Wrestling Association (HWA) is committed to supporting a wrestling program that strives to complement the high educational standards of The Hill School with the highest standards for competitive excellence. Member of the NWHOF-NJ Chapter Board 1994-2013. A professional engineer & land surveyor, headed the consulting civil engineering firm Studer and McEldowney, Clinton, NJ for 24 years, retiring 2009 as VP of Hatch Mott MacDonald, a multidiscipline consulting engineering firm headquartered in Millburn, NJ. He served as engineer for several municipalities in Hunterdon, Warren, Somerset and Mercer counties. Life Fellow, American Council of Engineering Companies & 2000 Man of the Year, NJ Society of Municipal Engineers.
