Anthony Policare

Tony reached the center of the mat in his modest green uniform and shook hands. This was his first bout ever. His opponent was from Windsor Jr. High. The seasons flew by, and it all seemed so brief. So, there Tony was, in New York City, wearing his NYAC singlet and representing the USA. This was his last competitive bout and he was now shaking hands with the reigning World Silver Medalist from Iran. At UB, Tony was to be team captain of a Buffalo Bull's squad that twice cracked the top 15 in national college wrestling rankings. The team was ranked 2nd in the East after capturing the East Stroudsburg University Open title and the NCAA Eastern Regional title at Cincinnati. In Buffalo, he became UB's Athlete of the Year. This award was presented by Howard Cosell and the renowned Jim McKay of ABC at UB's "Block B" Dinner. Additionally, Tony was inducted into the UB Athletic Hall of Fame. Tony Policare graduated from Vestal High School. He began wrestling in Jr. High School with Coach Gene Koharski. He wrestled for the Golden Bears of Vestal High under Coach Curt Galough. Tony wrestled for four years under Hall of Fame Coach Ed Michael. He graduated from the University of Buffalo, on a nationally ranked division I team. He then wrestled for the NYAC in both freestyle and Greco Roman, where he won All American honors. Tony's wrestling coaching led him to Elmira Notre Dame, Slippery Rock University for his Master's degree, Orchard Park High School, Dayton Regional High School (NJ) and Vestal High School. Coach Policare and his wife Sue have two boys, Matt and Tony, and grandchildren Anthony IV, Max, James, Lauren and Allison.
