Donald Blaine

Don Blaine was named Head Wrestling Coach at Cornwall High School in 1983 and continues to coach the Green Dragons with great success. He is a well-respected member of the Section IX coaching fraternity. He is a class act in victory or defeat and gives of himself unselfishly to help his athletes grow and be productive members of society. He possesses the highest degree of integrity and honor. Don works for the educational community in other capacities, which include: Social Studies teacher for 36 years - with 33 of those years at Cornwall High School, Cornwall High School Social Studies Department Chair for the past 11 years and Summer School Principal for 23 years. Prior to and while coaching, Don has earned several educational degrees and National certification. He earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Secondary Social Studies from SUNY at Cortland in 1979. He completed both his Masters of Arts in Education in 1983 and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Administration in 1990 from SUNY at New Paltz. Don also achieved and received his National Board Certification in Social Studies/History in 2008. In lifetime service to the community, Don has a unique perspective. He is a lifelong resident of Cornwall where he was raised, along with his brother John, by his parents - Donald and Judy. He wrestled in high school for the Cornwall High School Green Dragons. Together with his wife Sue, they raised their son David in Cornwall and now welcome David's fiancee Jennifer into the Blaine family. Don continues to give back to his community by directing the youth wrestling club of Cornwall for the past 35 years. He has provided coaching assistance with youth Little League and Soccer programs. While at Cornwall, Don took an already successful program and steadily built one that has the respect of Section IX coaches and beyond. He is the all-time winningest coach within the Section with 449 wins. His teams have amassed 13 League/Divisional championships. He has coached 27 Section IX individual Champions and 31 NYS Wrestling Tournament qualifiers. Of those qualifiers, 10 have gone on to earn All-State honors. Don coached two-time State Champion Paul Paquin. He has also coached a two-time Division II All-American and NYS State Place Winner in Mike Mitchell. Don has also coached two Academic All-Americans. Don has also received awards recognizing his outstanding abilities as coach. In 2008, the Friends of Section Nine awarded Don with the Coach-of-the-Year honors. In 2011, he was inducted into the NYS Wrestling Coaches Hall-of-Fame. Coach Don Blaine possesses the highest degree of integrity and honor. He is a true friend to the sport of wrestling. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame welcomes Don Blaine for induction into the class of 2014 and recipient of its Lifetime Service Award.
