Major General Dr. Arthur Sachsel

General Sachsel was born in New York City on November 11, 1926 and graduated from Jonathan Dayton Regional High School in Springfield, NJ, in 1944. A member of the wrestling team, he lost in the semifinals of the state tournament in 1943 before winning the New Jersey State Championship at 113 pounds in 1944. He attended the University of Michigan and earned a varsity letter wrestling at 121 pounds in 1945. Sachsel was enrolled in the pre-dental program at Michigan from 1944-46 before enrolling in the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine from 1946-50 where he received his doctorate in dental surgery in 1950. The United States Air Force was Sachsel's next stop in 1950 when he served as a general dental officer with the 125th Military Air Transport Service, Washington, DC. In 1951 he was assigned to the 36th Fighter-Bomber Wing, Furstenfeldbrick Air Base in Germany. He left the Air Force in 1953 for private dental practice in Garwood. In July, 1955 he returned to the Air Force and served as chief of restorative dentistry at Bolling Air Force Base, DC, until August 1957. He then transferred to the Air Force Hospital, Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, first as a general dentist and later as the base dental surgeon. He attended Ohio State University 1960-62 to earn a degree for M.S.C. Periodontics. From July 1966 to January 1969, Sachsel served at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa as chief of periodontics. He returned to the United States and served as chief of periodontics, assistant base dental surgeon, base dental surgeon, and director of dental intern training at Chanute Air Force Base IL, until May 1974. He transferred to March AFB, CA, as base dental surgeon and director of dental intern training. In August 1979, the general returned to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and headquarters for United States Air Force, Europe (USAFE) as Command Dental surgeon. He assumed the position of Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services at HQ USAF, Washington, DC, from October 1, 1982 through March 1, 1987. Major General Sachsel retired in 1987 after serving 34 years in the United States Air Force. Major General Sachsel's military decorations and awards include: the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters. The general is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontics, American Society of Forensic Odontology, American Association of Dental Schools, Pierre Fauchard Academy, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. He was promoted to major general March 1, 1984, with a date of rank September 1, 1980. General Sachsel is married to the former Leticia Mariano of Vallejo, CA. They currently reside in Riverside, CA. They have one son Jeffrey (wife Loretta) and grandchildren Adam and Liliana.
