Tim Johnson
For the past 28 years Tim Johnson has been “the voice” of college wrestling. During this time, Johnson has broadcast over 300 college wrestling meets for Iowa Public Television’s long-running sports series College Wrestling, ESPN, and the Big Ten Network, including the last 11 NCAA Division I wrestling championships.
However, that is just one aspect of Johnson’s life-long involvement with wrestling. As an athlete Johnson competed for Morning Sun High School and Coe College in Iowa. He was a successful coach at Mount Vernon High School in Iowa before accepting a leadership role with USA Wrestling. Johnson was also the Director of Wrestling at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He was awarded a FILA Silver Star for his efforts on behalf of Olympic wrestling. Later, Johnson served as the National Director for the American Coaches Education Program (ACEP), developing and providing coaching education resources for USA Wrestling and other national governing bodies.
For the past 21 years, Johnson has been living out his calling of encouraging and equipping the most influential leaders in athletics throughout the Midwest as the Vice President of Field Ministry for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. During that time he has organized the FCA/NWCA “Champions” breakfast at the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament, which has become one of the highlights of the championship weekend. Most recently, Johnson pulled together the leaders of the sport and successfully launched the sport-specific national ministry of FCA Wrestling. He currently oversees FCA Wrestling by supervising the Executive Director, and as a member of the leadership board.
Johnson, a 2007 inductee into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, has served on the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Governors, and was recently recognized as a lifetime Governor Associate. In 2007, he was named broadcaster of the year by the National Wrestling Media Association. In 2009, he was named journalist of the year by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine.
