John Kinley

A varied career of Lifetime involvement in wrestling punctuates Mr. Kinley's passion for the sport. He wrestled as a prep at North Linn High School, 1968-71 and earned his teaching and coaching degrees from Iowa State University, where he was the manager for Dr. Harold Nichols teams that won two national titles and placed fourth twice from 1971 thru 1975. He began his career as a high school social studies teacher and wrestling coach in Jefferson, where he produced a 74-26 mark in 11 seasons with 31 state qualifiers and two individual state champions. In 1975 he was one of the coaches who helped form the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials' Association and served one term as their president. In 1986 he started his administrative career as a middle school principal in Carroll where he was the junior high coach for two seasons. He went on to become the middle school principal in Ames before serving four years as superintendent of the South Hamilton Schools, including two years as shared superintendent with Hubbard-Radcliffe. He continued in administration as the superintendent of schools at Gilbert before retiring in 2011 ending a 36-year career in Iowa public schools. In the interim he was a wrestling official from 1986-2008 and an announcer at local wrestling tournaments. He continues to teach an undergraduate class to future teachers at Iowa State University During his career, John served the on numerous IHSAA committees, including the Wrestling Advisory Committee, Junior High Advisory Committee, and the Representative Council. In 2005 he started a current tenure as one of the public address announcers at the state tournament. He and his wife, Chris, have two sons and three grandchildren.
