Coach Ewing was a two lime state runner-up in 1979 and 1980 for Fort Dodge, where he was the team captain and the school's most outstanding wrestler, each on the 1980 State Championship team. That start led him to Iowa State University where he posted an 85-19 record earning NCAA All-American honors with a third place finish in 1985. After a year as a graduate assistant at Iowa State, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ankeny. In 1987 he embarked on a 26 year career as a head coach for the Hawks, posting a career record of 354-141,which ranks as 12th best on the all-time win list. He mentored 105 state qualifiers, 32 state place winners and four champions, while his team was a consistent top 10 finisher in the traditional tournament. He also directed Ankeny to two fifth place finishes in four appearances in the State Dual Team Tournament. He was a five time District Coach-of-the-Year and the 2013 Class 3A Coach-of-the-Year. Wrestling tradition runs deep in the Ewing Family. Aside from his exemplary career as an athlete and coach, Dave's two uncles Dick Black and Dave Church were State Champions for Fort Dodge; all five boys in his family wrestled successfully for Coach Don Miller at Fort Dodge; and he coached his son Zachary and nephew Topher at Ankeny High School. In addition he has two brothers that coached high school wrestling - Ron at Manson Northwest Webster and Randy, a 1985 state champion, coaching in Kansas and two nephews that won state titles - Topher in Iowa and Ben Ewing in Kansas.
