Fred Marcheson
Fred Marcheson wrestled for Iroquois Central High School, Elma, NY. from 1964-1968 and was part of the teams that held the National High School Record of 150 consecutive dual meet wins. He was also on the team that experienced their first loss in ten years of competition. Many felt this experience burned deep in his soul and fostered a hatred of losing and the drive to always prepare for success through hard work and dedicated effort. Following high school Fred attended SUNY Geneseo from 1968-72. In 1974 he became Iroquois' assistant coach and in 1979 Fred became the Head Wrestling coach where he accrued a 225-20-1 coaching career win/loss record until his coaching retirement in 2002. During that time, he had undefeated teams in 1981, 1995, and 1998, produced 43 individual class champions, 11 Section VI champions and won 10 divisional titles, 5 consecutive Section VI AAA class team titles (1998-2002) and was voted Divisional Coach of the Year 6 times. He also produced 5 state place winners. All of Fred's teams achieved Scholar/Athlete distinction and twice were New York State Scholar/Athlete State Champions for highest academic average in the state. Fred's accomplishments as a coach and educator have already been recognized by those close to him. He is presently a member of the Iroquois High School Sports Hall of Fame, the Iroquois High School Wall of Fame and the Section VI Wrestling Hall of Fame. In any successful and long-lasting athletic program, honesty, integrity, and character, come into play as the most important building blocks of that team. Coach Marcheson and his teams have exemplified those attributes time and time again. Coach Marcheson's presence in the wrestling room always commanded the utmost respect from his athletes. He prided himself and his team on being prepared and ready for all situations. Upon receiving notification that he had been selected for induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Fred made the following statement, "I was privileged to be able to come back to Iroquois as a teacher and coach. I have coached wrestling in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and 2000's. My goal was to establish a "Championship Tradition" on and off the mat. I did this with great support from fellow coaches, the parents, administration, teachers, community and the wrestlers. This affirms the faith and dedication of everyone connected with the Iroquois wrestling program." Nothing could be farther from the truth. Fred certainly has achieved great success and the community of Iroquois wrestling is proof of his accomplishments. Fred Marcheson and his wife Darlene reside in Buffalo. They have two grown children"” Justin, 36 and Katlyn, 23.
